Ed Tittel is a fourteen-year computer industry veteran with an interesting background. A Princeton and multiple University of Texas graduate, Ed started his academic career with undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology. Then, realizing the need for gainful employment, he moved into computer science. Ed spent his first six years in the industry writing code, primarily for database-related systems and applications, at companies like Information Research Associates, Michael Leesley Consulting, and at Schlumberger's Austin Research Center.

In 1986, Ed switched from staring at a CRT to the softer side of the business, moving into management and marketing. From 1988 through May, 1994, Ed was employed in a variety of positions at Novell, initially at Excelan (acquired by Novell in June 1989). Most recently, Ed was the Director of Technical Marketing in Novell's Corporate Marketing group, where he oversaw technical content for corporate strategies, publications, trade shows, and developer conferences. At present, he's working full-time as a freelance writer and consultant, and as a member of the NetWorld + Interop Program Committee, specializing in networking industry topics, training, and issues.

From 1987 through today, Ed has worked as a computer industry freelance writer. He has written over 20 books, ranging from the best- selling Stupid PC Tricks and Stupid Windows Tricks, written with Bob LeVitus (Addison-Wesley, 1991 & 1992), to NetWare for Dummies, 2nd edition (co-authored with Deni Connor and Earl Follis, IDG Books, 1995), and HTML for Dummies (co-authored with Steve James, IDG books, 1995).

He's recently finished Foundations of WWW Programming, with HTML and CGI, with Mark Gaither, Sebastian Hassinger, and Mike Erwin (IDG Books, 1995) and Internet World's 60-minute Guide to JAVA with Mark Gaither (IDG Books, 1995). As part of the ...Essentials series for AP Professional, Ed's also written Network Design Essentials, E-Mail Essentials, and Internet Access Essentials (co-authored with Margaret Robbins, 1994 and 1995), and ISDN Access Essentials (co-authored with Steve James and Dave Smith, 1995).

Ed has also written extensively for the trade press, with over 200 articles for publications including Byte, Infoworld, Iway, LAN Magazine, LAN Times, MacWEEK, NetGuide, and PC Magazine. At present, Ed writes a column for MAXIMIZE! with Bob LeVitus that takes a whimsical look at Windows esoterica and problems, another column entitled "New to NT?" for Windows NT magazine, and yet another for a Web-based 'zine called WEBster.
